Olympian Nodar Kumaritashvila
1988-2010
Olympic luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili died in Vancouver throughout an exercise run at Whistler Sliding Center, just hrs prior to the opening events were set to start. The 21-year-old in the former Soviet republic of Georgia was traveling at speeds near 90 miles per hour as he lost control. He went within the track wall close to the finish line and struck an unpadded steel pole.
Chest compressions and mouth to mouth resuscitation were carried out within about a minute from the crash, that happened at 10:45 a.m., 47 seconds in to the Olympian's run. He was airlifted to some nearby trauma center within 8 minutes, but doctors were not able to bring back the fallen athlete.
Kumaritashvili was making his Olympic debut after being approved for that Luge Men's Singles event that starts on Saturday, Feb 13.
The mind from the Georgia delegation is Irakly Japaridze. He stated, "Many of us are in deep shock. We do not get sound advice. We do not know whether to get familiar with the outlet events or perhaps the Olympics themselves."
Hrs later it had been introduced the opening events could be devoted towards the memory of Nodar Kumaritashvili. His team, putting on black arm bands, took part in the Friday evening spectacle and can compete within the Vancouver Games like a tribute for their deceased team member.
Warning…the attached photos and crash video are extremely graphic and might be very disturbing to see. The ultimate video shows his coffin being transported with a Georgian delegation.
