16-year-old Marlie Casseus has gone through four surgical procedures to get rid of an 18-pound tumor that covered almost her entire face and hampered her breathing. The whole process was chronicled around the Discovery Health Channel's A Brand New Face for Marlie.
Marlie is affected with McCune-Albright syndrome (polyostotic " floating " fibrous dysplasia), an inherited disorder of bones, skin skin tones and hormonal problems, together with premature adolescence. The development completely damaged her facial expression, leading to her being reclusive to prevent scorn and repulsion in her own native country of Haiti. Many people there thought Marlie's issue was the job from the demon.
With many of her mouth and nasal passages blocked, Marlie was just in a position to eat and breathe through one very narrow passage. The tumor started to shut on her behalf throat making breathing difficult. It might also have eventually triggered blindness.
All surgical procedures were carried out in the Holtz Children's Hospital, in the College of Miami/Jackson Memorial Clinic in Florida, and recorded for that television program.
The Worldwide Kids Fund joined with higher Samaritan for any Better Existence to finance Marlie's surgical procedures, which started when she showed up in Miami having a tracheotomy to place a breathing tube.
After her surgical procedures, doctors established that Marlie might needed further cosmetic surgical procedures later on, but stated the development wouldn't return.
